This book consists of two different research problems. In the first one, the aim is to model and simulate a solar-powered, single-effect, absorption refrigeration system using a flat-plate solar collector and LiBr-H2O mixture as the working fluid. The cooling capacity and the coefficient of performance of the system are analyzed by varying all independent parameters, namely: evaporator pressure, condenser pressure, mass flow rate, LiBr concentration, and inlet generator temperature. The cooling performance of the system is compared with conventional vapor-compression systems for different refrigerants (R-134a, R-32, and R-22). The cooling performance is also assessed for a typical year in Tampa, Florida. In the second problem, a numerical model is developed for a typical food retail store refrigeration/HVAC system to study the effects of indoor space conditions on supermarket energy consumption. Refrigerated display cases are normally rated at a store environment of 24C (75F) and a relative humidity of 55%. If the store can be maintained at lower relative humidity, significant quantities of refrigeration energy, defrost energy and anti-sweat heater energy can be saved.
Covering the simultaneous needs for cooling and heating in supermarkets by a proper utilization of vapour compression systems is an interesting possibility for significant energy savings. This is a major issue considering supermarket refrigeration systems consume a large amount of energy. The environmental concerns and regulations attached to refrigeration applications forced the implementation of new system solutions where natural refrigerants have been widely used. This book includes an analytic comparison of conventional supermarket refrigeration systems using R404A with refrigeration system solutions using natural refrigerants such as carbon dioxide and ammonia. This investigation points out the fact that systems running with natural refrigerants can compete with systems running with artificial refrigerants by using adequat heat recovery systems such as heat pump cascade, heat pump cascade for sub-cooling, fixed pressure system and de-superheater.

This book intends to present the application of FMEA method on Three-Way Catalytic Converter (TWC) system. Catalytic converter of auto-exhaust emission is one of the most successful applications of heterogeneous catalysis, both in commercial and environmental point of view. Catalytic converter has been proved critical to controlling pollution of CO-HC-NOx caused by automobile sources. TWC system functional lifetime is affected due to catalysts deactivation causes. The study is conducted by using Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) method. FMEA method is a systematic and analytical quality planning tool for identifying and addressing what potentially could go wrong with a product or process. It is widely accepted that FMEA is one of the best quality improvement tool. For the last several decades, FMEA has been widely used in industry especially in automotive sectors. It is expected to enhance the lifetime of the TWC by improving its resistance to deactivation. One of practical contributions of this research is to provide guidelines to engineers in monitoring the efficiency of TWC system from the FMEA report.

Determination of the optimal amount of refrigerant in field assembled refrigeration systems by use of a sight glass installed in liquid line is often misleading and unreliable. This is attributed to interferences to laminar flow of the refrigerant in the sight glass by ice formation in the expansion valve, vaporization of the liquid in pipes and foreign particles. Due to these interferences refrigeration systems may be overcharged or undercharged with the refrigerant. Measurement of temperatures and pressures at the inlet and exit of an evaporator may provide an accurate and reliable criterion of establishing the optimal amount of refrigerant in a refrigeration system. Using Rayleigh''s method of dimensional analysis, a mathematical model that expresses the evaporator cooling rate for field assembled refrigeration systems in terms of physical properties of the evaporator and the thermodynamic properties of refrigerant R134 a was developed. The model expresses the optimal amount of refrigerant in a refrigeration system corresponding to the maximum cooling rate.
In this study, a system was developed to shift electrical load out of Eskom’s peak period to the off-peak periods. This system was designed, based on research done for load shift philosophies of a refrigeration system of a mine. The investigation focussed on the mining industry, for it consumes a large percentage of the electrical energy generated in South Africa. The research results ensured a successful implementation of a Demand Side Management (DSM) program on the ventilation and cooling (VC) system of a mine, where large energy savings are possible. The installation of the new system’s controllers and control philosophy, resulted in a successful load shift execution during the Eskom evening peak period. Additional to the load shift results, energy efficiency was also obtained through this implementation on the refrigeration system. The success of the research can be proven by the actual energy savings achieved, compared to the predicted savings. The annual estimated load shift averaged around of 2.9 MW, with 3.5 MW during the nine summer months and 1.9 MW during the three winter months.

This research book is based on a prototype built for automated filling, under filled bottles removal and capping of bottles without any human intervention. The whole process is PLC controlled. The sequence of system is to fill the bottle, then check it's level with the help of sensor and eventually cap the bottle which pass through level sensor check station. Otherwise, level sensor would discard the underfilled bottle. This prototype was built using pneumatic actuatuors, pump, direction control valves, phototransistor,conveyor belt,air compressor and mechanically fabricated mild steel structure as a platform for bottles. For readers' interest, references and helping material has been included in this publication which surely will enhance their focus and exposure in this particular area.
