There are many well controlled studies documenting that Nigella sativa (Black Cumin) , a medicinal plant, has various pharmacological effects such as in dermatology, rheumatology, hematology. The present work focused on the protective effect of Nigella sativa against isoniazid induced hepatotoxicity in the rabbits. Nigella sativa, in the present study, was found effective in protecting the liver from isoniazid toxicity as seen by histopathological examination and by evaluating the changes in liver enzymes. The hepatoprotective effect of Nigella sativa is attributed mainly to its antioxidant potentials.

Doxorubicin (DOX) is an anticancer drug, used to cure lung cancer in spite of its side effect on the heart. The present study assessed the efficacy of black seed (BS) in treatment of the induced pathological alterations in heart of white albino mice following the injection with the anticancer drug DOX. Data showed the immunomodulatory effect of BS resulted in improvement in lung and heart tissues incurred lesions, and decreased the cytokeratin expression in lung tissues.
The seeds of Nigella sativa Linn. (Ranunculaceae) are commonly known as black seed or black cumin and locally called as kalonji. The seeds of Nigella sativa are used in herbal medicine all over the world for the treatment and prevention of a number of diseases and conditions. The present study revealed that oral administration of black seed (Nigella sativa) oil at a dose rate of 5ml/kg body weight for 60 days on daily basis had positive effect on spermatogenic activity in terms of histomorphometrical characteristics of testes i.e., diameter and area of seminiferouse tubules, percentage area of interstitial cells in relation to seminiferouse tubules, spermatogenic cell layer of seminiferouse tubules, thickness of germinal layer and volume of seminiferouse tubules of testes of all rabbits. Number of spermatogonia and serum testosterone concentration also increased in treated group as compared with the control group. Thymoquinone might be the major component of black seed (Nigella sativa) oil important for enhanced testicular activity.
D-Galactosamine (D-GaIN) has been shown to produce a liver damage closely related to human viral hepatitis with necrosis, inflammation and regeneration. Hepatotoxicity is one of the common diseased conditions leading to serious consequences ranging from metabolic disorders to even death. Management of liver diseases is still a great challenge to the modern medicine. At present only a few hepatoprotective drugs from natural sources are available and there is lack of effective allopathic medication available for treatment of liver disorders. We evaluated therapeutic potential of ethanolic extract of Nigella sativa (NS) seeds against D-GaIN and LPS induced liver damage in rats. NS is a small herb of the family Ranunculaceae, which has significant traditional usage as medicine and is also known to biosynthesize phytochemicals such as thymoquinone, theymohydroquinone, nigellicimine, terpineol and nigellidine. They have been shown to possess an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities.
